Effects of microbiota composition on emergence of depressions and behavioural disorders in animals

The aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge on the influence of gut microbiota composition on behavioural disorders in selected mammals and birds. Current research focuses on the influence of gut microbiota on the development of mental illnesses in humans and the potential therapeutic use of manipulating its composition. This paper briefly summarizes the main mechanisms of microbiota influence on the development of mental illnesses. The gut microbiota may also influence the development of behavioural disorders in animals. The literature suggests that changes in gut microbiota composition in humans with mental illnesses and animals with behavioural disorders share some similarities. In general, they are related mainly to a reduced abundance of selected genera of short-chain fatty acid producing bacteria and an increased abundance of gram-negative bacteria. The exceptions are destructive behavioural disorders in animals, which are associated with increased abundance of the Clostridia class and decreased abundance of the Lactobacillus genus. Suitability of integration of individuals with pervasive developmental disorder

The title: Suitability of integration of individuals with pervasive developmental disorder The aim: The aim of this thesis is to establish whether it is suitable to integrate individuals with pervasive developmental disorder into a mainstream setting Methods: To elicit the suitability of a possible inclusion of 20 children (boys and girls aged 7 to 15) with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), two sets of questions and a free interview were used. The sets of questions focused on problematic areas specific to individuals with pervasive developmental disorder, such as difficulties in communication, social interaction and imagination. A free interview supplemented the set of questions aimed at educators. Results: The results of the research showed that our sample group of children with PDD would not be suitable for integration with regard to problems with communication, social interaction and imagination. The inclusion is impossible in cases of 30% of individuals, who suffer from selective mutism. These children do not communicate nor co-operate with their educators during the lessons. The analysis of selected stereotypies in horses

This work is aimed for the most common stereotypical behaviour of horses - cribbing and weaving. It deals not only with the description of their expression but also with detailed analysis of their duration and frequency during the day. It compares their occurrence in regard to different age, sex, breed and also type of stabling. 8 horses from 5 different places were chosen for the observation. The monitoring was performed by the direct observation and by 24-hours video recordings.
